Our School mentoring in the News Examiner

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships. The Big Brothers Big Sisters Vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schooling, and stronger communities for all.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was founded in 1904, and celebrated its 100th year of service to children in 2004. Nationally, the program serves approximately 225,000 children, with the goal to serve 1,000,000 children. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Fayette County is an important part of the movement to brin extremely effective and life-changing relationships to many more children.

Our local agency was founded in 1979 by a dedicated group of Fayette County residents. In our first year we served a handful of children. Currently we have many more children signed up for services and volunteers who are ready to help out by being Bigs, members of our Board of Directors, supporting our yearly events or donating to the organization. We are incredibly proud of this growth, but we still have much more work to do. We have made it a goal to double the number of Fayette County children served in active match relationships. This requires engaging volunteers to be Bigs and raising funds to support our matches. For as little as $25 a child can be matched with a life-changing mentor.

Our Mentoring Programs Work

National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

· More confident in their schoolwork performance

· Able to get along better with their families

· 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

· 27% less likely to begin using alcohol

· 52% less likely to skip school.
